40 Inventive Principles
Partial or Excessive Action

If it is difficult to obtain exactly 100% of a desired effect, then by using slightly more or slightly less, the problem may be considerably simplified.

EXAMPLE:
  1. To paint a cylinder completely, more than the required amount of paint is applied. Excess paint is then removed by rapidly spinning the cylinder.
  2. To ensure the sealing of glass ampoules containing medicine, an intense flame is applied to the neck of the ampoules. To protect the medicine inside from degradation from the heat, the ampoule is immersed in a cold-water bath.
